Strength in Geographic Diversification

I live in Canada where we have had to live with the odd case of devastating weather that could crippled my conventional business. About 10 years ago there was a massive ice storm in Eastern Ontario that took out the power grid for weeks. It didn't effect Bread Roots but it could have. I was glad we were serving other areas which were not effected.

It's hard not to see all the weather related and now oil related catastrophies in the U.S. At present anybody in the fishing business in the Gulf don't even know if they'll have a business in a month's time. Some of these people have been fishing all their lives. Now they could get wiped ot by something totally out of their control. It was the same with Katrina and lesser disasters that have happened all across the USA.

 There are other disasters looming like the shortage of water in Arizona and the desert areas as a result of the underground aqueduct getting depleted.They have no idea how much water there is underground. Great? What would happen to real estate values and jobs then? While we talking about "no idea": They also have absolutely no idea how much oil is actually available for world consumption. That's a scary thought. I sure hope we are far less dependant on oil than we are now when it finally runs out.

This disaster scenio is all too real for many people. What can they do about it? Well you could start a home based business via the internet that was not just based on the area in which you live. You would be diversifying your income not only by type of income but also by geographic location. This is also a good idea if you live in areas that are chronically depressed as in the "Rust States".

So unless you've  got a fantastic job with the government or already own a business that already has these features, I might be a good time to consider adding something to your income column:  like a home based small business that's not just based in your home town or your home State or even your own home country. 

 In my case, I live in a relatively small country in population so marketing to Canadians is limited. With my home business on the web, I can market to the whole USA and the World. This opens up huge possibilties that don't exist any other place. Diversification of income is the real secret to being well off and staying that way. F*R*E*E* Really

 F*r*e*e? Really

I have been amazed in the past to see the word "free" abused so much

Its used like "new" or "improved" . Products may be new or improved but "free"

to my mind means "free". That means no money is involved now or in the future.

You often see "free trials". That's ok because you understand there will be a cost.

You most often find "free programs" that are indeed free but so limited in use as

to make them useless. All the while, you are being bombarded to upgrade. It's

as if the vendor now has a free license to bombard you with sales talk.I  have them even

asking me to upgrade when I've already upgraded.

Then there are other programs which state they are "free" and before you even finish

reading the first sales page there is cost involved. So what happened to "free"?

Does "free" not mean "free".  The word "free" was used in the subject heading of the

email you opened so its did it's job of attracting you but then it's quickly forgotten

in the subsequent sales page.

In the past, I have ignored the "free" part because I know nothing is really "free".

Now, I have decided that anytime some advertiser uses the word "free" and then

starts talking about dollars, I am immediately terminating the message.

The advertiser just proved to me they were not credible or believable so why should

I continue to do business with them?

Who's Putting the Bread on Your Table?

In my conventional business I sell bread to health food stores. I focus on only those brands that I sell because that's where the money comes from. I really couldn't care less about the big brands other than they might be encroaching on my niche market of organic and gluten free breads.

The same is true for my cell phone. I am a Rogers customer in Canada but Rogers does not and will not put food on my table. Instead, Rogers will do a good job of vacuuming my wallet. Until now, I haven't had any choice but I do now.

Shortly, I will be selling and promoting my own line of cell phones, prepaid plans and voip services. These services gives me the opportunity to earn income for my family. Why would I consider any other provider?

The great thing is everybody I talk to has the same and equal opportunity to do the same thing. The phone in all its forms is almost a basic necessity or a public utility like electricity and water. Who can live without them? So if you can't live without them, it sounds like a good business to be making an income in.

Are you making money from your cell phone? Home phone? No? 

You may not have had any options before but you do have now.

A lot of people start small businesses because they want more control over their lives and a have a strong independent spirit that prevails inside of them. These are very powerful motivators and are probably responsible for more small business set ups than even the desire to make more money. In fact, when people are really passionate they often say things like "I'm not doing this for the money" or "the money is not important" or "the money will follow". Herein lies the problem. If making a lot of money is not your primary goal, you probably won't make a lot of money. You may end up settling for a lot less than you could get as an employee.

In my distant past, I set up a business to make the best natural fresh sausages available. Paul Zane Pilzer in his book "Unlimited Wealth" defines "technology gap" as the difference between the best practices possible with current knowledge and the practices in actual use. Simple examples of current technology gaps would be a bookkeeper who uses hand written accounting journals to accounts receivable, accounts payable and payroll rather than using computer program like Quickbooks or Simply Accounting. Sure you can still do it the old way and it will work but current technology does it much better. Fax machine took 25 years before companies realized the great potential of these machines and now younger more internet savvy people want to use email rather than fax machines because it's easier and better for them.

Identifying technology gaps is the key to success in business. If you can find a way to do something better than its being currently done then you can help close a technology gap and make money in the process. Technology gaps exist at the national level, institutional level, in small business, and in the everyday life styles of individuals. Ask yourself: What can be done better than it could be using new technology?

In all the excitement and hard work that goes into setting up a conventional small business gross overall margins need to be thrashed out. It is a crucial step that must be taken early in the and form the central backbone of any business plan. What is your margin? What can the industry bear? Is the end price realistic? Will it sell?
